Minimally Invasive Surgery
Your provider team at Dekalb Women's Specialists will always recommend conservative treatments and therapies before turning to surgery. However, when surgery is necessary, we offer our patients minimally invasive approaches that use the smallest possible incision size and other techniques that can result in less post-op pain and scarring, as well as speed up your recovery time.
What Is Minimally Invasive Surgery?
Minimally invasive surgery describes advanced surgical techniques that utilize special tools and small incisions to perform various surgical procedures.
Our physicians are experts in minimally invasive surgery and use less invasive techniques whenever possible because of the many benefits it offers you, including:
- Less scarring
- Reduction in post-surgical pain
- Faster recovery
- Minimal blood loss
- Reduced risk of infection and other complications
In most cases, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery allows you to have your procedure performed in an outpatient setting, so you can go home the same day.
Types of Minimally Invasive Surgery
There is a wide variety of technologies and techniques that can be used to perform a minimally invasive procedure. At Dekalb Women's Specialists, some of the most common of these procedures include:
Laparoscopy
During a laparoscopy, your provider uses a laparoscope – a slender, flexible tube with a light and camera – that is inserted through a small incision in your abdomen. The laparoscope transmits images to a computer monitor. Your surgeon may make additional incisions to insert small surgical tools to perform the procedure needed, using computer imaging as a guide.
Vaginal Technique
During this type of procedure, your provider gains access to your reproductive organs through your vagina, making small incisions where necessary to perform the surgery.
Robotic-Assisted Surgery
Robotic-assisted surgery is the most advanced form of minimally invasive surgery. It combines minimally invasive surgical techniques with robotic technology, which allows your surgeon to perform complicated procedures with greater flexibility and precision. The physicians at Dekalb Women's Specialists use the da Vinci Robotic Surgery system.
Endometrial Ablation
Endometrial ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that is performed in our office. It is used to treat heavy menstrual bleeding. During the procedure, your provider will insert a special tool into your uterus, via the vaginal canal, which emits radiofrequency energy to destroy the endometrial lining.
What Is Minimally Invasive Surgery Used For
There are many different gynecological conditions that can be treated using minimally invasive surgery – and many types of procedures can be done in this manner, as well.

- Hysterectomy
- Removal of fibroids, polyps, and ovarian cysts
