Pregnancy Q & A

What is involved in pregnancy care?

Pregnancy care doesn’t just involve the screenings and support you get during the nine months you’re expecting – it’s so much more.

Pregnancy care includes preconception counseling to help you get your body in the best shape possible to have a baby. This is a time to discuss fertility and possible genetic testing, too.

After conception, your pregnancy care consists of standard prenatal visits and screenings. During this time, the team ensures that you and your baby are healthy and that your fetus is developing appropriately.

The team at Dekalb Women’s Specialists is here to help develop and carry out your birth plan. If you face any complications, such as premature labor, you can trust the expert obstetrics specialists to help. They provide support for both vaginal and cesarean deliveries.

After delivery, the practice provides comprehensive postnatal care. The providers ensure that you’re healing properly, both physically and emotionally, and they answer all your questions about breastfeeding.

What should I expect during prenatal care?

Prenatal care includes a wide range of services tailored to your particular pregnancy. Whether this is your first or fifth child, you benefit from quality, supportive prenatal care to ensure you and your baby are as healthy as possible during the nine months of gestation.

Prenatal care includes:

  • Regular checkups
  • Nutritional support
  • Screening tests for mom and baby
  • Treatment for common pregnancy ailments
  • Support for pregnancy problems and complications
  • Labor and delivery counseling and support

In general, prenatal visits are scheduled once per month for the first 28 weeks, once every two weeks for weeks 28-36, and once a week from week 36 through delivery. These standard prenatal visits may vary slightly depending on your particular pregnancy and if you’re at a higher risk of complications.

What is a high-risk pregnancy?

A high-risk pregnancy is one where there’s a greater chance of developing complications in mom or baby.

Issues that could put your pregnancy at higher risk include:

  • Maternal age over 34 or under 18
  • Multiple fetuses
  • Maternal health issues, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or lupus
  • Gestational diabetes or preeclampsia that developed during pregnancy
  • Health problems involving the baby

The obstetrics group at Dekalb Women’s Specialists is experienced in providing care in such cases. You may need additional tests and screenings as well as more frequent appointments during your pregnancy if your pregnancy is deemed high risk.
